[Introduction to the Dharma of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva]
"Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva" wears a crown of five Buddhas on his head, wears a cassock, and is all white. He holds a pearl of light (orb) in his hands and sits on a lotus platform.
[Living Buddha Lotus and His Holiness Lu Shengyan’s precious teachings – the great origin and practice instructions of “Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva”]
"Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva" is one of the deities of Lu Shengyan, the living Buddha of Lotus. His Sanskrit name is "Qisha Di Tierpo", and his secret name is "Vajra of Compassion and Wish" or "Vajra of Wish". "Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva" is one of the four major Bodhisattvas of Buddhism. Together with Guanyin, Manjusri and Samantabhadra, he is respected by the world. Because his aspirations are so profound and vast, he is called the "Great Wish Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva".
In the Ksitigarbha [Ten Wheels Sutra], He appears as a Buddha, a Bodhisattva, a Sravaka, a Brahma, a Mahavatar, and even a Yama. He prays for manifestations in thousands of places. The Tantric Womb Realm Mandala is located in Ksitigarbha Monastery. In the Vajra Realm Mandala, the Vajra Banner Bodhisattva of the Precious Buddha in the south is Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva.
"Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva" has many appearances, usually wearing a crown of five Buddhas, holding a pearl of light in his hand, wearing a cassock, sitting on a lotus throne, and holding a tin staff. Along the roads in Japan, there is a dome-shaped statue of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva. This Bodhisattva is the most widely spread in Japan. Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva, Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva, Wonderful Banner Bodhisattva, and Infinite Heart Bodhisattva are all nicknames of "Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva".
The names of "Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva" include: "Vajra Vow Ksitigarbha, Vajra Treasure Ksitigarbha, Vajra Compassion Ksitigarbha, Vajra Banner Ksitigarbha, Radiant Light Ksitigarbha, Heaven-Blessing Ksitigarbha. Protecting Ksitigarbha, Prolonging Life Ksitigarbha, Muni Ksitigarbha, Praising Dragon Ksitigarbha, Breaking Victory Ksitigarbha, and Unresting Ksitigarbha." The instruments held in each of them are different.
"Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva" is the Great Compassionate Bodhisattva who was entrusted by Sakyamuni Buddha in Trayasa Heaven to teach and transform sentient beings in the six paths.
The title of Ksitigarbha is: being patient and motionless is like the great "earth"; meditating deeply is like the secret "hidden".
There are six more Ksitigarbhas:
1. Vajra Ksitigarbha - holding a human head banner in his left hand and forming the nectar seal in his right hand, he specializes in saving the "hell path".
2. The Vajra Treasure Ksitigarbha - holding a jewel in his left hand and forming a nectar seal in his right hand, he specializes in saving the "hungry ghosts".
3. Vajra Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha – He holds a staff in his left hand and makes the welcoming mudra with his right hand. He is dedicated to saving the “animal realms”.
4. Vajra Banner Ksitigarbha - holding the Vajra Banner in his left hand and applying the fearless seal in his right hand, he specializes in saving the "Asura Path".
5. The radiant Ksitigarbha - holding a staff in his left hand and forming a wish seal in his right hand, he specializes in saving the "human world".
6. Congratulations to Ksitigarbha - holding the wish-fulfilling pearl in his left hand and forming the Dharma seal in his right hand, dedicated to saving the "way of heaven".
The most miraculous thing about "Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva" is that he appears as the "King of Yama" and saves the most miserable and evil beings in hell.
The six messengers are:
1. Flame Messenger. (Transform into hell)
2. The boy holding the treasure. (turn into a hungry ghost)
3. A powerful messenger. (turn into animals)
4. The Merciful Goddess. (Transform into Shura)
5. Treasure Goddess. (Transformed into a human)
6. Those who photograph angels. (transformation into heaven)
He also has the vow of "Unless hell is empty, I will never become a Buddha."
"Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva" saves sentient beings in the "shepherd style", that is, he saves all the sheep to the other side, and he himself is the last one to become a Buddha. He wants all sentient beings to become Buddhas before he can become a Buddha. This is the Bodhisattva with the most compassion and the most powerful vows.
Why did the Buddha entrust the heaven and earth to Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva instead of other Bodhisattvas?
Mainly because among the eight great Bodhisattvas, only Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva appears as a "monk". The Buddha hopes that the future of Buddhism will be governed by "monks" and supported by "lay people".
Lotus Living Buddha Sheng-yen Lu’s vow is exactly this: “Unless hell is empty, I vow not to become a Buddha, but to shatter my body and bones to save all sentient beings.”
In fact, "I will not attain Buddhahood until hell is empty" is the great vow of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva, which shows that the teachings that Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva gave to Living Buddha Lianshengyan Lu Shengyan were very profound. The mantra for practicing "Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva's Dharma" is: "No discrimination."
"Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva" is also the "brother" of Living Buddha Lian-sheng Lu Sheng-yen; the "Jiuhua Mountain" Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva temple among the four major temples in China was established by "Jin Qiao-jue", which is a very spiritual temple, and "Jin Qiao-jue" is also the "Golden Lotus Boy".
Living Buddha Lian-sheng Lu Sheng-yen once asked Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva: "What pure land does Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva have?"
Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva said: "The world does not know this Pure Land, and no one has spread it. The only person in the world who knows the name of this Pure Land is Living Buddha Lotus Shengyan."
Then he asked, "What is the name of the Pure Land? Could it be the Jiuhua Pure Land?"
Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva said, "No, the full name of this Pure Land is 'Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva Cuiwei Southern Paradise'."
Therefore, those who practice the Dharma of the deity of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva can also be reborn in the Pure Land of the Buddha, which is the Pure Land of Paradise in the emerald south of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva.
Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva originally had six messengers accompanying him. Among them, the "Mighty Messenger" was entrusted by Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva to Living Buddha Lian-sheng Lu Sheng-yen to be with him at all times. Therefore, there is a mark of the Mighty Messenger on the thumb of Master Lu's right hand.
